Tribute to the Ocean Floor
|
I work in my studio, high up and over looking the ocean,
watching the changing tides and the boats that skim over the top.
What is life at the bottom? Tribute
to the Ocean Floor is my fantasy. This wall hanging consists of fibers (wool, ribbon, angora,
silk and cotton), glass, shells, beads and coral. I began by constructing a needle woven base that might
resemble the ocean floor, carefully choosing fibers for their varied color
and texture. I then
embellished the base with fibers and beads to imitate coral and rock,
added beaded netting, shells and glass fish and wove a large shell out of
silk fibers. What would an
ocean fantasy be without a mermaid? There
she is. The entire wall
hanging is attached to 2 pieces of coral, its frame for hanging. Tribute to the Ocean Floor is the first of a trilogy.
I have started the 2nd one, which is bead embroidery on
fabric.
